Yahoo Optimizes Mail and Messenger for Android and iPhone

July 2nd, 2010 Arvind No comments

Yahoo today announced new applications and new web-based services for both Android and the iPhone. Starting with Android, Yahoo introduced a new Mail application, a new Messenger application, and a new Yahoo search widget. The Yahoo Mail application offers push notifications of new email, integration with Yahoo Mail contacts and the device’s contacts, email search, photo attachment support, attachment view and download support, and quick switching to Messenger. The Messneger app lets users see their friends’ presence, send IMs as SMS messages, receive push notifications, send photos to friends from the camera or gallery app, and use all the Yahoo emoticons. Both applications are free downloads available from the Android Market starting today. As for the iPhone, Yahoo is using HTML5 to create a new web-based email application. The application lets iPhone user see HTML emails, as well as compose, reply, and search messages even when offline. It also previews photos in the email message and lets users manage their folders. Yahoo says the new HTML5 email web-app for the iPhone works similar to the way its desktop web client does. Last, Yahoo has improved the way Yahoo News works for iPhone users.

New design new bugs :( … hopefully Apple fixes these quickly

June 24th, 2010 Arvind 1 comment

Its been heard that iPhone 4G is having some issues with antenna design. If you recall from the keynote, that’s where the Bluetooth / WiFi / GPS antenna meets its GSM / UMTS counterpart.

One iPhone 4 demonstrated the issue everytime it was held in our left hand (as a right-handed person is apt to do) so that our palm was essentially bridging the two antennas. If we had to guess, we’d say that our conductive skin was acting to detune the antenna — in fact, we’ve already managed to slowly kill two calls that way so it’s not just an issue with the software erroneously reporting an incorrect signal strength.

That said, we had no issues when Apple’s $29 rubber bumper accessory (given to us free for standing in line) was attached, creating a buffer between our palm and the antennas. Our second UK-purchased iPhone 4 was fine, showing none of these handling symptoms.

Jailbreak iOS 4 using redsn0w 4.0 on Windows

June 18th, 2010 Arvind No comments

The redsn0w beta has been updated for 4.0GM on iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC version). Multitasking and homescreen wallpaper are turned on by default (Apple doesn’t normally allow this on these 2 devices). You can deselect these features if you choose.

A version for Windows is now provided.

Just like our other betas, this one intentionally doesn’t “hacktivate” the iPhone. Please wait for Apple’s public release of 4.0 for that part of it.

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That’s because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1/beta4/GM IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

What does iPad lack?

February 11th, 2010 Arvind No comments

1. Camera: No camera for clicking pics, recording video or doing a video chat.
2. USB support: Since it doesn’t have camera to click snaps or record video. There should be an easy way to put your album or data into it. USB at present is the best option.
3. Flash support: Apple claims that in majority of cases flash is a culprit of breaking down Mac OS. It may be, but the fact is that Flash is used very widely now-a-days. People are migrating their sites to flash.
4. Multitasking: Perhaps the biggest disappointment, you can’t watch video while reading out a document in Pages.
